D.A.D.S. - Dad’s appreciating down syndrome

I was just checking out some web design galleries, when I found D.A.D.S., and I have to say it looks really good for a non profit site.  Non profits normally get the shaft when it comes to creative sources, but I’m glad that they’ve got a good site for their good cause.

Here’s a bit of an overview

Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or D.A.D.S., is an organization of fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome. We hesitate to call our self a “support group”, even though we do, in many ways, support each other. We prefer to think of D.A.D.S. as an “action group.” You won’t find us in a church basement drinking warm coffee and whining about having children with Down syndrome. Instead, you’ll find us out in the community coaching our kid’s sports teams, participating in our children’s IEPs, volunteering at local Down syndrome fundraising events, and even sponsoring fundraising events of our own.

We host regular meetings where our members come together to share insights and experiences. Face it: there are certain responsibilities that generally fall on the shoulders of the father. Having a child with special needs often affects how we approach those responsibilities. We invite expert speakers to discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and many other issues that affect our children’s lives. And of course, we share stories and experiences that are unique to fathers of children with Down syndrome. Your colleagues at the office may not understand your excitement when your 5 yr old makes “poopie” on the toilet for the first time, but other D.A.D.S. will, because we’ve all been there.

Anyway…I just wanted to get the word out there for any parents out there with similar situations.  Keep up the good work guys.

Pedo-crazed parents call father a “pervert” for photographing his own children at a park

July 23rd, 2008 Posted by Ray

This story that I found over at BoingBoing really upset me.  I mean MyBabyOurBaby is all about taking photos and saving as many memories of your children.  So when people start calling names and making accusations about people, it’s just a little hard to swallow. I get that there are messed up people out there that are bad people and you don’t wont them around your children.  But 1 you’re in a public space and 2 he was there with his child.

What do you think?  Should public parks not allow cameras or are people too scared for their children?

For all you mothers to be. I came across these funny maternity shirts a while back and now I’m sharing it with you. If I were female and pregnant I know I would definitely sport one of these. Let’s just say it’s my way of letting everyone know, “No I’m not fat, or bloated. I’m pregnant and proud, thank you very much.” I think these would be a great baby shower gift. If you guys are interested click on the image or here for more info.

This one is pretty cool. It’s like a new take on the old school “Cast Away” (you know the movie with Tom Hanks where he’s stranded on an island and just the pendant with his girlfriend’s picture keeps him alive?) style pendants. You always want the people that are close to you; right next to your heart. And now with these you can keep anyone in your family close.

Diaper Dude makes Diaper Bags cool!

Well cool enough. I mean there’s no real way to sexy up changing a diaper. But for us guys, walking around with a big pink flowery bag with a ton of diapers in it can be about as embarrassing as walking down the street in a tutu. That’s where DiaperDude.com comes in. The creator of the brand, Chris Pegula, was cursed with the pink diaper bag, so he took it upon himself to help out the rest of the male parentals by creating a range of diaper bags which “appeals to image-conscience men everywhere looking for ease of use.” Now we can look like we’re just cool techy nerds with a laptop bag on our shoulder, even though it’s really just diapers and formula. What they don’t know won’t hurt ‘em.

How did we forget to tell you?

March 11th, 2008 Posted by Ray

I’m not sure how we forgot to tell you, but as of last week My Baby Our Baby is completely FREE! No more monthly fees, no more “your book has been disabled”, and your book will never be deleted. We just wanted to give you as much as possible and for you to really enjoy our site.

There is a premium upgrade available that gives you and all members of your book the ability to upload as many photos as you want for just $39.95 (for a whole year). But if you don’t upload that much then our free service is perfect for you. It’s a great way to archive your memories — forever.

We hope this is good news to you, cause we’re happy to offer it.

Enjoy!

Do It Yourself Father

If you are a newbie father, you are quite possibly freaking out a bit. What do I do? When do I do it? and where do I get some information about this crazy parenting stuff? Well, if you look around there are a ton of parent centers and information, but if you’re looking for one with a little male attitude then you’ll quickly find that the cupboard is kind of bare. That’s where DIYFather.com comes into play.

DIYFather.com was brought into this world by Wellington-based dads Scott Lancaster, Eric Mooij and Stefan Korn who recognised the need for a dedicated website for fathers. Based on their own experiences of struggling to find useful parenting related information from a male perspective they created DIYFather.com

A huge reason for me telling you about DIY Father is the pure amount of information they have in all categories. Fathers and Sons, Fathers and Daughters, Food and Feeding, Understanding a New Mother, and the list just goes on for days. Check it out. I think you’ll really enjoy it.

One of the Most Adorable Kids…

I think I’ve ever seen. I mean this kid would just be cute walking down the street, but strap a guitar on him and let him sing the beatles and he’s the king of cute. Amazing!

Private Beta Testing This Week!

January 19th, 2008 Posted by Beau

Well it has been a very long time coming, but this week we’ll be starting the Private Beta test, where we will be inviting certain people to try out the site before we go public, and to help us smooth out any kinks there might be. We’re really excited about this test, and about getting some other people onto the site, and we’re hoping they are as well!

The new server appears to be running well, and is all geared up to handle everyone’s uploads, stories etc. We’ve made a load of improvements just in the last 2 weeks, and things are looking great. As a hint of what’s to come, we’re also working on integrating with the guys at Picnik (hard to spell, easy to use) to give you super-simple online photo editing! Neat.

If you don’t get an invitation this week, don’t fret — we’re keeping this group small, but we’ll be opening things up shortly. Hopefully somewhere around the first week of February, the site will be opened up for registrations from everyone.
